The Importance of Insurance When Life Happens
The last month in 2017 was a difficult one for me. Just when everything was going smoothly in life the unthinkable happened. It was a rainy Wednesday evening and I was on my way to Moe’s restaurant. I pulled up in the parking lot and for some reason I tried to go around the Dunkin Donuts that was in front of the Moe’s and BLAAMMMM. I hit a dang pole. The pole definitely won that battle.
Now I’m a great driver I haven’t had a speeding ticket in over 10 years. I’ve never even been in a car accident either. So when I purchased my car insurance I thought, “Why should I pay an extra $40 a month for collision insurance? I’m not going to hit anything I have a great track record, plus it’s just a waste of money. Insurance companies charge way too much and I’ve been paying this for some time and never needed it.” Well, well, well… What do you know I actually needed it this time. It was a single car accident at my fault, so the only claim I could file was through collision coverage. I had everything else but this coverage so I could save as much as possible on my budget.
Unfortunately, the repairs would have to come out of my own pocket. The damages cost just under $6,000 to repair. =( Parts, labor, paint all adds up. The lesson here was definitely learned. From here on out I will always have full auto coverage. If I had just listened to my mom and girlfriend, I wouldn’t be in this predicament lol. I’d only be paying a $1,000 deductible instead. And maybe a little bit of a surge in overall monthly coverage, but it’s still better than paying that lump sum for the total damages. Before this accident, all I could see were numbers for budgeting. Nickel and dime-ing every expense is not the way I want to live. There’s a time and a place for things to save money on but when it comes to your prized possessions, life and health you shouldn’t shortchange that.
Stop living like you’re invincible. Protect yourself and your family. If you have kids, go ahead and get good life insurance. Get full auto coverage even though you’re a great driver. Get solid health insurance cause you never know what can happen. Life is unpredictable and when life happens, you want to make sure you’re prepared. Granted, there are unexpected events that catch us off guard from time to time. You can’t predict what’s going to happen to you in life, but you can purchase insurance to help. I’m thankful because it could’ve been way worse. I was able to repair my car within a few weeks and now it’s back up and running. Lesson learned to always protect your assets and prepare for the unexpected cause life will always happen.
