Cutting the Cord as a Sports and Movie Fanatic
As a huge sports fan, cutting the cord might sound like a very difficult task to do. We’re obsessed with our favorite teams and we love to watch them play live in real time. Fortunately, we do not have to rely on cable for that anymore!! There are online streaming companies that offers these services to us at a flat rate now. There’s tons of streaming devices available at your expense. But all you need a is a streaming device like a Roku TV, Google ChromeCast or Amazon Fire Stick.
All three of these devices are very affordable. With wifi connection you can stream content right from your mobile phone to a tv that has a streaming stick plugged into it. Sling TV and PlayStation Vue are some of the live streaming services that I’ve used and enjoyed. They both also have mobile apps that let you use your phone as a remote to push content onto your TV.
For premium channels, there’s services like HBO Now and Starz Streaming app that offer their content separately at a flat rate for $14.99 per month. They can both stream through Chromecast, Amazon and Roku sticks.
I’m sure you’re familiar with Hulu and Netflix streaming services at flat rates also. The point I’m trying to make is that the market is shifting away from the traditional cable viewers. In this new digital age, everything is available online. There is no need to get stuck in cable packages that start low for the first 12 months and dramatically rise after the promotion period has ended. Then cable companies charge you a fee to rent their cable boxes/modems and all of these extra unnecessary charges.
All you need is the internet.
Here’s what I did
I canceled my cable, which was $148 per month and was going to increase up to $170 after my promo was over. I told my cable company I only wanted hi-speed internet, at $80 per month I get up to 75 megabytes per second(mbps) which is good enough for streaming video and online gaming. I went and purchased 2 HD antennas so I can get all of my local channels for free.
Then I purchased the core slim package with PlayStation Vue for $34.99 per month. This is my favorite streaming service because it allows me to watch SEC Network, which is going to be huge during football season GO DAWGS. PS Vue also comes with an online DVR service so I automatically record every basketball or football game just in case I miss them. Additionally, I purchased HBO now for $14.99. This totals up to around $130 per month and this is a flat rate for the year so I don’t have to worry about dealing with customer service every time my promo is up. My current internet data plan is capped at 1024 GBs(gigabytes). The highest data I’ve ever reached since I cut cable was 350 GBs within a month, so I don’t have to worry about overage charges while streaming. Another way to cut your costs is by sharing your login info. In my family, if one person has Netflix we all have Netflix lol. So my brother pays for Netflix, Hulu, and Starz while I pay for HBO now and PlayStation Vue. We all just share the info to keep costs low. Like I said earlier, watching sports and movies are huge for me. Once I figured out I could use my PS Vue login info and watch ESPN live through either “PS Vue” or “Watch ESPN” mobile apps, I didn’t feel a need to pay for cable anymore. Sling TV and PS Vue also offer free trials so be sure to check them out before you decide to buy.
